Backstage is a crucial part of a live performance happens behind the scenes, both before a production is mounted and during its run. The technical crew, are the people employed behind the scenes (“backstage”) to control all the technical aspects of creating a concert, play, musical, opera or other live performance. Backstage crew need to be able to unload scenery, maintain and repair the ‘flying’ equipment and scenery. They may need to raise and lower suspended scenery during a performance, operating the mechanical components of the stage. In smaller theatres where the flying systems are not mechanized, there can be a lot of physical labour involved. They have to be quick, quiet and calm when working backstage. The technical crew fall into different categories based on area of expertise and responsibilities. The most common categories include: Stage, Production, Rigging, Lighting, Sound, etc.
